San Diego
San Diego is a city in Southern California on the Pacific coast. It is the eighth-largest city in the United States, with a population of around 1.3 million. In addition to the renowned San Diego Zoo, other popular attractions include the world-class SeaWorld and LEGOLAND California.
The city is known for its mild year-round climate, which encourages active outdoor lifestyles. The majority of the population is made up of non-Hispanic whites, with a smaller amount of people who are Hispanic and Native American. A large number of people in the area are also LGBT.

Other ethnic groups include Spanish-speaking people, who account for 1.4% of the population, and Puerto Ricans, who account for 0.6% of the population. Additionally, Mexican Americans make up nearly a quarter of the population in the Los Angeles area.
Historically, San Diego was a backwater town. But it grew to prominence after Alonzo Horton built a new town on the San Diego Bay. Known as the “New Town,” the settlement was a convenient place to ship goods and became the center of economic and governmental activities in the region. As such, it soon surpassed the original settlement, known as the “Old Town.”
In 1821, when the Presidio and Mission of San Diego were established, they were the first European settlements in what is now the state of California. The first Catholic service in California took place at the chapel at Ballast Point. Soon after, the California Trail was the primary road for westward movement.
Throughout the city’s history, San Diego has served as the site of many important battles. Most notably, in 1912, the city played a key role in the free speech war. Anarchists and vigilantes were violently repressed in the area, and the San Diego Police Department killed an Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) member.
Today, San Diego is home to several high-level professional teams, including the San Diego Padres and the NBA’s San Diego Rockets. Several other semi-professional teams, as well as amateur sports teams, are located in the area.
A variety of recreational activities are offered in the area, such as tennis and cycling. Golf is another popular pastime. For those seeking more educational activities, the University of San Diego, the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, and the San Diego State University all have campuses in the city.
