San Diego
San Diego is located in Southern California on the Pacific Ocean. It is the second largest city in the state and eighth in the United States. With its climate and natural deep water harbor, it is a popular destination for tourism and recreation.

San Diego is home to the University of California, San Diego. The university has helped to create a biotechnology research center in the area.
San Diego is also the economic hub of the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos metropolitan area. It is home to several colleges, including the University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University. Several other top-tier professional teams also call the area their home. San Diego’s climate has been classified as Mediterranean. This means that it is generally dry during the winter and wet during the summer. Aside from the rainy season, the area has a mild, year-round climate.
However, early mornings and evenings can be chilly. That said, most days are sunny. During the winter, the rainy season lasts from late December to mid-March. At the same time, the sun usually returns. If you are planning to visit San Diego, dress for the season accordingly.
In recent decades, the city has tended to vote for Democratic presidential candidates. From 1968 to 1988, all six Republican candidates received majorities in the city. George H. W. Bush is the last Republican candidate to win the election in San Diego.
Currently, the city has an 8-1 Democratic majority in the city council. Council members are elected from single-member districts within the city. These elections are non-partisan, per California law. Generally, most office holders identify as Democrats or Republicans.
Among the main economic engines of the city are tourism, international trade, manufacturing and military-related activities. Located in the coastal bay of San Diego, SeaWorld San Diego is a popular attraction for families and animal lovers. Guests can get a close look at dolphins, whales and sharks. Another famous attraction in the area is LEGOLAND(r) California.
San Diego has a number of high-rises under construction, two of which exceed 400 feet. In 2013, the city was listed as the ninth-most LGBT-friendly city in the U.S. The city is also home to several alternative newsweeklies, such as Voice of San Diego.
The United States Navy has a long history in the area. Many Navy ships and aircraft have docked at the port of San Diego. One of these ships, the USS Midway, is now a museum.
